Geotab
The Press Room
Role: Design Intern
Overview:
Geotab is a telematics company focused on reducing friction in the world of vehicle tracking and maintenance. When it comes to buying Geotab’s services and products, users must go through a reseller, as Geotab doesn’t sell directly to individuals. While working on Geotab’s external-facing site I focused on creating user experiences easily navigable to businesses and stakeholders.
Their target audience was largely stakeholders, resellers, investors, and company’s with large freights.
Phase 1: Understanding the Issue
As aforementioned, Geotab’s primary clients were resellers or companies moving large freights. The request for the page’s redesign came from the Marketing and Communications team. They expressed to my manager and I the page was hard to navigate, and they weren’t able to communicate the most important press releases to their stakeholders.
The layout of the page had no visual or content hierarchy. Based on research received from stakeholders, the Communication team told us which content their readers were finding most pertinent and asked us to update the page to highlight them.
Phase 2: Wireframes and Meetings
I worked on a team with the Marketing Manager and two other outsourced agency designers who helped create wireframes. These wireframes were created with Adobe XD. The designs were also created alongside the development team, so we’re able to understand the scope of what’s doable given the time and project constraints.
The design at the time was a three-column grid listing all the latest press releases, without any filters or search options. During our meetings, we decided the best way to highlight the most important stories would be to add a banner at the top of the page linking to the most significant press release, as decided by the Communications team. We’d then show the two most recent posts below it.
While we’d have preferred to have a filter option added to the page as well, the development team told us that wasn’t possible at the time.
Phase 3: Final Page
This project was met with many time constraints. Due to the timing of the homepage’s redesign the development team was unable to implement the banner feature. Instead, the page was made live with the Latest Updates section, and the banner update was left for a later date.
